NEW DESTINY’s CHILD music. Well, actually it’s Michelle Williams Featuring Beyonce & Kelly Rowland with some support from Bey’s lil sis Solange. The song is titled “SAY YES” and were leaked earlier this week. Michelle took precaution, and now the mixed and official version is on pre-order on iTunes set for release next Monday June 2nd. Images of Beyonce, Kelly, Michelle & Solange on set of the music video for “Say Yes” surfaced earlier this week. “Say Yes” is currently the 3rd single off Michelle’s yet to be released 4th studio album “Journey To Freedom” Gospel album that is. I can’t get enough of this song, and YES Kelly & Beyonce is singing about the lord, so do expect them singing “When JESUS say yes! Nobody can say no!” I just so happen to love it.

Our SA Idols Interview with S8’s Sama Yo

Image

O.S.A.I: You were born on 6 February 1988 in ? Grahamstown. Tell us a bit about yourself growing up.

Sama Yo: Yes, 6 Feb 19 eighty-six, actually *checks diary for her next botox appointment * HA! My dad was an Afrikaans lecturer at Fort Hare University. When I was turning 8, he shipped my older sister and I to boarding school in Grahamstown.

Most of the time, Victoria Girls' Primary was like living in this one big playground. My closest
friends and I started an Capella, group, called the Orangutang Gang. We had one show and
got the audience donate money.
Fun! Fun! Fun!
Besides that, the school had a lot of cultural extra-curricular activities to keep us busy.

O.S.A.I: Do you come from a musical family?

Sama Yo: I’d like to think that I do, even though no one does music, professionally. I think most of my family members are musically inclined, you know. My older sister has an amazing voice. So she will most probably get into it when she feels like putting her fashion designs aside for a bit.

O.S.A.I: What was your 16 year-old Sama like?

Sama Yo: My mom died, that year. I bought my first guitar and started breaking the school rules, I thought were irrelevant. (i.e: breakfast was compulsory, but it was also 25 minutes long. Skipping it, meant I could sleep longer and get a warm shower)

O.S.A.I: If you could give your 16 year-old self some advice, what would it be?

Sama Yo: Gosh, I think I’d just give her a BIG hug. I was very bubbly, but also a little over-contemplative.

O.S.A.I: You studied at Rhodes University. What was your Major?

Sama Yo: Drama and Linguistics

O.S.A.I: You play guitar & keyboard. What other instruments can you play, if any?

Sama Yo: *sigh* I also play the recorder, does that count? It’s that one instrument that most piano teachers give prospective students to test them (AND their neighbours).

O.S.A.I: What is your favourite music genre?

Sama Yo: I do not have one! I read a quote once and it described me and how I relate to music, perfectly: "Classic rock at heart, yet I do have another side called Alternative. My characteristics are rock and roll. Folk is when I have something to say; rap is when I have a lot to say. My happiness shines through pop. I laugh through country, I cry through the blues, I dance through hip hop, and I sing through opera....Indie is my unheard of nature (and trust me, I am very often unheard). Acoustic is when I am best heard, soft rock is when I am best known...Generally, foreign = my nationality. Renaissance, my history. And if people ever met me, they'd describe me as rhapsody. I am the music." - Muffinz

O.S.A.I: Why did you enter idols?

Sama Yo: To get to the Top 5, so that casting directors for TV/Theatre would give me a chance to take on lead roles. Music is my first love, but acting is my forte. If I had a choice between my eye-sight and hearing, I’d rather be blind, because I couldn’t bear living without it. I made a decision when, as a kid, that, if there was one thing I could work hard at, one thing I was willingly sweat blood for, and be absolutely brilliant at, it was acting. Acting is the way I understand people. It creates a space for me to put myself in someone else’ shoes and love them completely. And ‘getting’ a character is that place, where it’s like you meet a complete a stranger, and feel like you’ve always known them after your first conversation.

(I speak too much, but allow me)
So before getting my day job and Idols, I was doing theatre. Idols was my gateway to getting

back into theatre/film and securing gigs long enough to pay rent and keep bread on the table.

O.S.A.I: You sang Michelle Branch’s “Are you happy now” for the audition in Johannesburg. That song is one of my favourites, but not that well know. What made you chose it for the auditions?

Sama Yo: I was feeling a little intimidated about the whole thing, so I thought I’d turn the tables, and intimidate the judges, instead. Even if it they weren’t intimidated. It’s just one of those perfectly cheeky songs, that make you walk away with your head up, even if you lose.

O.S.A.I: Do you have any advice for aspiring Idols contestants?

Sama Yo: Don’t do it! HA! Kidding: Keep the bigger picture of your dream/career in mind, always. Work on your craft. It.is.an.art.

O.S.A.I: The judges never gave us, the public, a chance to vote for you. In your opinion, do you think the producers of Idols have a specific type of winner in mind, even in the audition phases?

Sama Yo: I’ve no concrete/factual info regarding that, but I’d like to think that, to a certain extent, they do have something specific in mind. Idols is a brand and has an “image” to uphold.

Image

O.S.A.I: Have the exposure on Idols opened new doors for you?

Sama Yo: Not really.

Image

O.S.A.I: Would you do it again?

Sama Yo: No

O.S.A.I: What was theatre week like? Was it as brutal as it appeared on TV? Did you get any sleep?

Sama Yo: My theatre week highlight was the great accommodation. Even though all I got up for was tea and honey, I looked forward to breakfast and getting back to my hotel room, showering and getting into bed after a long day. My low light was the group stages. If you’re an introverted extrovert, with a unique taste in music, like me, the group stages can be difficult.

O.S.A.I: How much of what we saw on TV was staged ( as it is a reality show)?

Sama Yo: Well the surprises/curve balls are planned. Our reactions, most definitely aren’t.

O.S.A.I: In the theatre week group there were quite a few contestants who were doing it for the second time around, e.g. Tshidi, Shekhinah, Obakeng & Nosipho. Do you think that too much emphases was placed on these contestants to do well the 2nd time around?

Sama Yo: They most definitely have some kind of pressure to do better. I think they’re a really talented bunch. Nosipho has an amazing personality, gives the most entertaining performances and like Tshidi, has lungs for days. Obakeng and Shekinah have unique voices. So to a certain extent they are able to stand out on their own.

O.S.A.I: Would you say that their experience gave them an unfair advantage?

Sama Yo: I don’t know. We’re individuals and our journeys through experiences and what we take from them are different.

O.S.A.I: Is there a specific cut-off point where one cannot enter Idols again if you did before ( except for age) e.g. if you reached the Top 10?

Sama Yo: Besides age, no – I don’t think I know of one.

O.S.A.I: Who is your favourite Idols winner to date & why? (if you watch Idols)

Sama Yo: I haven’t really followed Idols since Heinz Winckler. *hides* Still kinda like him! Ha! But my general favourites have been, Lloyd and Graham Watkins. I respect them, because, they have a vision for music as an art & craft. I also respect them because they’re always growing, especially in their knowledge and understanding of the local music industry.

Elvis, Lloyd and Khaya seem to carry a very distinct air of humility, as well. I LOVE that!

O.S.A.I: If you could chose one super power for a day what will it be and why would you chose that specific super power?

Sama Yo: Well, I am really crazy about live music. The lyrics of a song I learned when I was younger puts it this way: “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. I’d like to hold it in my arms and keep it company… And hear them echo through the hills for piece throughout the land”

Image

O.S.A.I: What projects are you currently working on?

Sama Yo: I’m working on an EP over the weekends, so that I have something to give to the owners of places I want to play at, you know. Writing A LOT and jamming with a lot of different musicians.

O.S.A.I: What is next for Sama?

Sama Yo: World domination *evil laugh* No really. I’d like to tour, get signed to a good record label with an awesome team, make 10 records for 15 years and then take time off to do some acting. Until then, I’ll be gigging where I can and when can, and keep folks posted on the dates of these happenings etc on Facebook and Twitter

Our SA Idols Interview with Idols SA S5 co-winner, Jason Hartman

Jason (high res pic)

We recently spoke to Jason Hartman about his sophomore album, his passion for conservation and his acting debut……

O.S.A.I.: You were a musician before you entered Idols. You played in several Rock bands, including Men of Trees with your brother & father. Do you think it gave you an advantage in the Idols competition, (because you already had a fan base)?

Jason Hartman: I don’t really think it affected the fan base to any extent but it certainly assisted me from a confidence perspective as I had been used to performing in front of crowds. I must add that I was more nervous than I have ever been, in the first audition!

E488DB6712C9C327DEFF21C429E6Jason with Sasha-Lee Davids just after it was announced that hey are co-winners of Season 5

O.S.A.I.: The strict Capella rule was abolished in Season 5. Do you think that being able to audition with an instrument is an advantage? An example being the media attention surrounding Elvis Blue’s audition. He was featured in the Huisgenoot Magazine 2 weeks after the audition aired & had at that stage only made it to the Top 100?

Jason Hartman:I think it is great to showcase your talent and skills on a musical instrument, without a doubt! The show is all about entertainment and it is encouraging for musicians to be recognized for these skills as well as their singing ability.

Jason at Hollywood Black Film Festival in HollywoodJason in Hollywood @ the Black Film festival

O.S.A.I.: You wrote most of the songs featured on your debut album, “On the Run”. Is it essential to write your own music if you want to make it in the local music industry?

Jason Hartman: Its great to be recognized as a song writer as well as a performer – I thoroughly enjoy writing music and am extremely grateful that some of my songs climbed the charts as they did!

Live performanceJason performing live

O.S.A.I.: Is it hard trying make a name for yourself, as a solo musician after being on such a huge reality show as Idols? Trying to break away from what the public perceive as their Idol?

Jason Hartman: It is a tough industry and there is no doubt that one has to keep going and performing to maintain a strong profile in the market. All the Idols have been very different in styles and music profiles – they are all very talented as well as those who didn’t actually win have gone on and done really well! It is an incredible journey for anyone who has walked the Idols path!

40150_436620271486_573636486_5845974_5577048_n

O.S.A.I.: You have worked very hard prior to entering Idols to establish a music career. However, do you think that other musicians could look down on you as it appears as if you rose to fame too easy & too fast?

Jason Hartman: There is always that perception but hopefully by now, the musicians out there know that we were always a hard working band and remain as such to this day. Idols gave me a platform and for that I am very grateful!

tn_Jason & Band2 (3)Jason & his band. His Dad and older brother also plays in the band

O.S.A.I: How would you describe/define fame? What does it mean to you?

Jason Hartman: For me it was being able to meet people whom I would probably never have had the opportunity of meeting – mostly incredibly good folk nationally and internationally. Doors seemed to open and it was great to be able to walk through them and make the most of the moments!

8A6D775BBFEE208EF9A796DF3A193

O.S.A.I.: Where does Idols SA responsibility for furthering the winner’s career stop and the artist’s responsibility start?

Jason Hartman: As the show ends, the hard work begins!

O.S.A.I.: You opened in 2010 for American idol winner, Kelly Clarkson. You are both song writers. Did you ever discuss one another’ songwriting approach or shared tips? What is your songwriting process like?

Jason Hartman: Sadly we had very little opportunity to chat – the tour was fast and very hectic. I was filming in my first movie at the time as well which was a whole new experience jumping from acting and performing at such a high level. As regards to the songwriting, I have been writing for a long time now and it has helped having a brilliant producer such as Marius Brouwer who walked every step with me, in the studio.

Jason performing liveYellow Wood pic 1Jason performing live

O.S.A.I.: You also opened for The Eagles in 2011 & played at the Grand Prix in Monaco. You also performed for the concert before the wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco & Charlene Wittstock. How do you ensure that you stay in the public eye?

Jason Hartman: These were unbelievable experiences and we were very blessed to have had these opportunities. Right now, we are about to embark on a 5 month national tour, Rocking 4 Rhinos, where we are going to be raising funds for various environmental issues in our beautiful country. I take this cause very seriously and hope to make it a huge success. It starts in April and we hope to be completed by September.

tn_Jason-January 2012 (28)

O.S.A.I.: You made your acting debut, paying the lead in “A Million Colours”, the follow-up to the 1970”s “e’Lollipop” movie. It was released in September 2011 at the Toronto Film Festival. Although SA only got to see it in April 2012. Tell us a bit about the metamorphoses from musician to actor.

Jason Hartman: It was an incredible experience and one which I would love to get more involved in. I was insanely busy at the time of making this movie and every day was a learning curve for me-luckily I had incredible support and assistance. It’s a great movie and has done very well internationally. I am proud to have been associated with Andre Pieterse and Peter Bishou and the entire film crew.

_DAR2510Jason performing with his band in Monaco

O.S.A.I.: You charity, Men Of Trees, an international organization, teaches disadvantage communities how to grow sustainable green gardens and planting trees. You were also involved with environmental projects before your Idols journey. How important is sustaining the environment to you? Do you think South Africans do enough to sustain our environment?

Jason Hartman: I am very involved with raising funds and I will always continue to be driving these issues and making the public aware of the problems that we face. It is our world and extremely important that we nurture it and leave something good for future generations.

O.S.A.I.: How do you feel about the government allowing fracking in the Karoo? (the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks )

Jason Hartman: I haven’t actually got involved in that particular issue -there are so many various environmental problems to deal with daily in SA and I have remained focused on poaching and food growing and addressing poverty etc

O.S.A.I.: You started Conservation Guardians, an initiative to assist against poaching, in particular Rhino Poaching as well as other environmental issues in Southern Africa, in 2011. Tell us a bit more about this project. How can we as the public get involved in such a project?

Jason Hartman: We have a website www.conservationguardinas.com which pretty much explains everything and also for anyone wanting to donate towards the cause, there are steps to follow on our site. We will be doing further fund raising in the near future.

O.S.A.I.: Who updates your Wikipedia page? I found it rather helpful in preparing for this interview.

Jason Hartman: Well, actually my mother ended up being my Manager for a number of years and she was responsible for that site!

O.S.A.I.: You co-wrote the song” “I’m Alive”with Marius Brower and Sir Tim Rice. It features on the sound track of the animated movie “Jock” (Jock of the Bushveld), released in August 2011. Do you have any plans to collaborate with Sir Tim Rice again?

Jason Hartman: I would love to do more work with Sir Tim Rice but, as yet, we have had no further projects.

Jason Ellie

O.S.A.I.: When can we expect another album from you?

Jason Hartman: I am finalizing three of the songs next week – basically the album is complete and we are working on fine tuning it before we release it. Hopefully people enjoy it, I think there is something for everyone on it!

O.S.A.I.: You were the 1st SA Idols winner that was a full-time musician before he won Idols. L’loyd Cele, Elvis Blue & Mark Haze ( who were all musicians before Idols) to name few, all now have successful careers due to Idols. Would you advise musicians that are struggling to find an audience to enter Idols? Do you think that even if they don’t make it to the Top 10, the exposure is enough to give their career a good kick-start?

Jason Hartman:Absolutely! The experience is once in a lifetime and one must always follow one’s dream (as much as possible).

469887F335DABE10B4D1C131B1B21

O.S.A.I.: What is next for Jason Hartman?

Jason Hartman: So many things-I feel as though I have grown enormously over the past few years and have a clearer picture of where I would like to be in the future. Music is my first love and I am blessed to have a family that is with me every step of the way. I would love to pursue acting further as that was an awesome experience. I will continue fund raising and making the public aware of the plights we are faced with daily and I hope that, in my lifetime, we get to see the positive changes taking place in the world! We can make the difference, of that I am sure! In the meantime, the show goes on and we will continue performing all over SA and hopefully abroad!

Elvis Blue: No we did not know each other. we knew of each other. I was fired from the first band I ever played in. The reason given was that my band member had found this girl who could play the harmonica and who wasn’t shy. Years later I found out that it was Karen. I once did a short stint with her while she did shows along the garden route.

O.S.A.I.: In 2008 you appeared as Jan Hoogendyk on the Kyknet TV programme, Kwela. You had dreadlocks, sang a beautiful gospel song, I later discovered is titled “Woorde” & described yourself as “ a friend to your friends, a husband to your wife and a student of life” Is Elvis Blue still a student of life today?

Elvis Blue: I guess we are all students of life. Whether we like it or not, life somehow has it’s way with us. Some of us learn more than others in the process. I hope I could be someone who learns from all that happens to me.

O.S.A.I.: If you could go back now to that time and tell Jan Hoogendyk that God is about to bless him with so much more than he could imagine; how would Jan respond?

Elvis Blue: I am no more blessed now than I was before I won the TV show. Yes, have more stuff, but how “blessed” a person is should never be determined by the amount of stuff he has.

O.S.A.I.: Things my Father said, originally by Black Stone Cherry was chosen for you by Idols SA as your 1st single. You however changed the lyrics: “would make me a better man” to “would teach me who I am” and “woman who understands” to “lover that understands” What is the significance for you in the changes you made to the lyrics?

Elvis Blue: I just felt more comfortable with the changes. First prize would have been to be able to do my own composition, but seeing as that was not allowed it was important that I could relate with the song. The people who listen to the words are always very important to me. Men and women would listen and relate to the song and that is why I changed it to ensure that the song would not be gender specific.

O.S.A.I.: Cape Town Idols S9 auditions are coming up this Saturday. Do you have any advice for aspiring contestants?

Elvis Blue: Be yourself. This is tough because sometimes just knowing who that is is very hard, but knowing where you want to go and what you want to do with your life and your music will help allot. Don’t enter if you don’t feel you are ready.

O.S.A.I.: Does using a stage name give you/your family a certain kind of anonymity?

Elvis Blue: Probably a little bit. This was just how it turned out.

O.S.A.I.: Does your daughter know who Elvis Blue is?

Elvis Blue: She believes I mysteriously turn into this person called Elvis Blue when I walk onto a stage. It’s very funny.

O.S.A.I.: You have a great repertoire of self-penned Gospel songs. However, at Gospel Skouspel 2012 you performed your popular hits like “Lifeline” & “Lighthouse” Do you deem “Lifeline” & “Lighthouse” to be cross-over Gospel songs?

Elvis Blue: It’s hard for me to make a distinction. Music is all about Connection for me. The listener decides how he interprets a song and who or what he connects with whilst listening to it. These songs can definitely be “gospel” songs.

O.S.A.I.: Do women faint when you enter the room/stage/building?

Elvis Blue: LOl….NO. I wish my wife would sometimes, but it has not happened yet…..holding thumbs though.

O.S.A.I.: You are known as probably the most humble and grounded local artists. We think that is why your fans are solidly behind you in all you do. They not only voted for you, they prayed for you during your Idols journey. How would you describe your average fan /supporter?

Elvis Blue: I wish I could describe them, but I am sure they are all different. Each of us have our own Story and I won’t be able to box such a diverse group. I love that about them.

O.S.A.I.: It appears as if you don’t realize how “big” you have become ( fits in with the humble theory) over the past 2 years. What impact has fame made on your family (parents, siblings), friends and your marriage?

Elvis Blue: Thank you. The last two years have been great. A dream come true really. My family has always supported me and the pay off has been just as exciting for them as it has been for me.

O.S.A.I.: You are a a follower of Christ. The music industry is unscrupulous and cut throat. Would you say no to a career furthering project if it contradicts your believes and values?

Elvis Blue: Certainly, but very few prospects would do that. I believe there are more places you should be than places you should avoid.

O.S.A.I.: The internet/social media is a powerful tool to promote your music all over the world. Look what a Myspace video did for Colbie Caillat. Your YouTube channel could do that for you, Posting more live videos, showing your versatility and interesting tour inserts could assist in that. It however requires taking your mind off your music and putting on a PR hat. How involved are you with your PR?

Elvis Blue: It’s important to keep the people who support you in the loop. I think about it allot and try be as active as possible

O.S.A.I.: You recently mentioned in an interview that “you will always be that Idols guy” Idols is a brand. It’s not necessarily a bad thing – you can use it to your advantage. Have you ever thought about using it in our own PR campaign esp. during Idols seasons?

Elvis Blue: I never said that. This particular paper did have an interview with me, but they chose to use my words completely out of context. Unfortunately there is not much one can do about that sort of thing. I wish there was. I am extremely thankful that I was able to do the show and it has changed my career in a positive way.

O.S.A.I.: You are the first SA Idol to have a great following from all sides of the Rainbow nation. Collaborating with urban superstars like Lira or Proverb may expose your versatility to a larger part of the SA music industry. Would you consider such a collaboration?

Elvis Blue: Yes I would, but it must always be about the music. This sort of thing can easily become a PR stunt. If the song is right, I am willing to try it.

O.S.A.I.: How much say does your record label have in what you do/record?

Elvis Blue: They ultimately pay for and own the majority of the project, but they fortunately give lots of freedom when it comes to the music.

O.S.A.I.: You have an international sound. What is your label doing to assist you in releasing your music in other countries ( including Africa)?

Elvis Blue: They are unfortunately not doing that much at this stage. We are working hard at it.

O.S.A.I.: What was/is the most difficult: trying to get a break in the music industry before Idols, or proving that you are just not another fly by night, after Idols?

Elvis Blue: Trying to break before it. I struggled full time for twelve years and still could not do it.

O.S.A.I.: You have won a SAMA and have platinum selling albums to your name. Does the appearance fee increase once an artist can put these accolades behind his/her name? Who benchmark these fees?

Elvis Blue: LOL….I have great people working on those things. Like any business it is important to price yourself right.

Our SA Idols Interview with Idols SA S8 Top 32 finalist: Shen Winberg

SHENFM - Shen les paul guitar

We recently chatted to S8 Top 32 finalist, Shen Winberg about life, Idols and playing the Cowbell…….

OSAI: You were born in Cape Town on 16 November 1985. You grew up in Mbhokota , Johannesburg and Cape Town. Tell us a bit about yourself, growing up.

Shen Winberg: In the village that I grew up in, the mamas used to call me ‘Mzamaan’, which means ‘boy who tries’. So I guess that says a bit. Personally, I’d have preferred if they’d gone for, ‘boy who succeeds and drives ladies wild’, but I guess it’s not bad for an umlungu. But seriously, growing up in an African rural environment definitely gives you grounding which I still feel within me today. I have great parents that groomed me, even though they were in the MK and times were hostile for a while, I always felt safe. I was always dancing and listening to music. But it was only at 10 did I start playing and practicing.

OSAI: What was your favourite subject at school & why?

Shen Winberg: Trick question. I’m not answering that. Just kidding, to be honest, it was maths and art. Some people say its a weird combo but did you know that musicians have a high affinity for maths.

OSAI: You studied Music at the University of Cape Town. What is your favourite music genre?

Shen Winberg: Well I studied jazz and I’d say that was my first love. But it turns out girls are more into pop so I’ve had to broaden my horizons… haha, you know, I love a fusion of things. dance, pop, jazz, and African. All good! But what gets me going, is seeing a crowd dance in front of me, That’s the genre I dig.

OSAI: Tell us about your band ShenFM.

Shen Winberg: It cheesy to say it rocks? SHENFM is a band that mixes songs together like a DJ would, hence the FM part of it. When you see us you will understand. We do 1 hour sets of non stop playing and singing, fusing songs into each other. No break between songs, 100% pure party!

(OSAI: No it’s not cheesy!)

OSAI: How will you define the band’s sound/style?

Shen Winberg: Our style is now changing actually. Its becoming more electro dance but with African music fused into it, and then a little “jazziness” to it. All in all its just good solid funky tunes. The lyrics on the other hand deal with the duality of life, light and breezy songs about love and life, then more political and worldly songs about hardship (hardship and perhaps stupid politicians…)

OSAI: You founded the Modern Rockstar Academy in Cape Town.. Tell us about the academy. What is your goals for the academy?

Shen Winberg: One thing I realized whilst studying music at UCT is that musicians are not equipped with the acumen of making money out of music when graduating. I view music as any other business: You have a talent, nurture it until you amaze people with it, then create a brand from it and be an entrepreneur in your field. So The modern Rockstar Academy is designed to teach people young and old about this.

photoDubai gigShen gigging in Dubai last year

OSAI:

You learned to play guitar at the age of ten. Can you play any other instruments?

Shen Winberg: Other than being an expert in the cowbell, I sing and play guitar and tinkle a little on the piano… Ok I lie… no cowbell.

OSAI: Wikipedia defines “Shen” as (1) central word in Chinese philosophy for God & 2) a shape-shifting Chinese dragon believed to create mirages. If you have to define who you are, are you closer to (1) or (2)?

Shen Winberg: Well I try to keep my ego fairly inflated, but I don’t quite think I can claim godhood, so I guess I’d have to go for 2. Besides, I like the sound of something that ‘creates’. Also, dragons are awesome.

OSAI: ShenFM released the single “City of Might” early in 2012 & then you decided to audition for Idols SA S8. Did you see Idols as a platform to showcase your talent/band and find a larger audience?

Shen Winberg: Absolutely, as the most prestigious talent show in Africa, I couldn’t imagine a better platform from which to launch onto. I definitely had high hopes for my time on Idols and so far, they seem to have been met. I went on with the goal of increasing visibility and that definitely happened.

OSAI: Did you find that bigger audience?

Shen Winberg: My Facebook fans and friends have grown by 1000’s, and the performances Im playing are more prestigious just since idols I’ve performed in Dubai 4 times, went to perform in Sweden with my Modern Rockstar Academy pupils for Her Majesty Queen Sylvia of Sweden, and various festivals and schools around Stockholm, not to mention playing at celeb weddings and wot- not… performing at J&B Met this year…you get the drift.

OSAI: Do you feel that the Idols producers have a set idea of what they want the winner should be, even in the audition stages?

Shen Winberg: I don’t want to be part of any conspiracy theory but… yes… I do. And no more comment on that.

OSAI: What advice can you give to aspiring Idols contestants on how to survive the audition phases?

Shen Winberg: Think this. You are who you are and you do YOU best. So if ‘a’, you are giving it your best shot, and ‘b’, your are confident in your approach and style, then guess what?! You are already an idol. Never forget that. If you don’t get far, then it wasn’t meant to be any way because they are looking for a SPECIFIC winner with specific characteristics. If its not you then there’s another space in he market elsewhere where you will succeed. That message is not for the wooden mice…those guys should please just stay in the shower.

OSAI: In hindsight, would you enter Idols now ?

Shen Winberg: Yes I would do it even knowing the outcome. Its a self testing experience that no other experience can force out of you.

OSAI: Do women faint when you enter the room/stage/building?

Shen Winberg: I’m trying to think of a not douche way to answer this… And failing. Yes. Yes they do. hahahahaha, you know what? I’m not that smooth character you see in the movies. I’m freakin shy. But when I’m on stage? different story.

photomisssaShen with Miss SA

OSAI: Who is your favourite Idols winner to date & why?

Shen Winberg: Must be Elvis Blue, because he has a good story behind him. Its more than just a voice its a story and ethos that you can be congruent in believing in. It takes more than just a man to make an idol. Its takes a background and a story to bring a fan closer.

OSAI: What is next for Shen?

Shen Winberg:This year I bring out the SHENFM new sound! Oh and take over the world… there’s that too. Please keep posted to SHENFM on FB…
